How Lennar Brought Premium Geothermal to 1,500 Colorado Homes at Cost Parity
Lennar wanted an all-electric solution that worked in Colorado before it was required
Leadership saw the national push toward electrification coming. The solution had to solve three problems at once, while meeting DOE Zero Energy Ready Home and ENERGY STAR NextGen requirements.
Protect margins and timelines. Gas main costs and land development delays were eating into both. Anything short of cost parity with conventional HVAC wouldn’t work.
Perform at altitude. Consistent comfort through high-altitude winters, fewer service needs, and a path to Xcel incentives without the added insulation, ERVs, and 2.0 ACH50 rating air source required.
Keep homeownership affordable. No higher energy bills for buyers compared with gas.
A turnkey program built to hit cost parity at scale
A $25,000 Xcel Energy rebate and $2,000 state incentive fully offset system cost, but incentives were only part of it. Dandelion drills multiple homes per rig mobilization and places one or two bores directly under each home’s footprint, minimizing trenching and tie-in costs and keeping drilling off Lennar’s critical path. Program volume cut ground loop and interior equipment costs by as much as 20%.

Two rigs kept pace at one home per day
Lennar started up to 10 homes a month at the first community. The site was cleaned up before vertical construction began, and it’s now complete.
Cost parity for Lennar. Electrification without compromise for buyers.
For Lennar, geothermal has become a selling point that moves homes. The pathway in Colorado is clear, and Dandelion is seeing similar results in other markets.
